When It's Okay to Be a Loser: Day One of My Weight Loss Journey

If I lose weight, then everything else in my life will fall into place.

Somewhere, somebody stopped reading and either moved to another site or is readying their fingers for a scathing comment. If you're the latter, then please stick with me for a bit longer.

My weight gain was not a sudden event. I didn't wake up one morning carrying an extra 40 pounds (although, having the British currency version would...never mind. Google shows that the exchange rate to USD isn't that great today). Everything happened gradually, with the weight creeping on thanks to day after day of bad habits. I don't want the Word Police to get on my case about this, either, because they are bad habits: too many calories in the form of processed foods, quitting my exercise routine... It all added up. It all added up to 40 pounds over my ideal body weight!

If I lose weight, then everything else in my life will fall into place, because I will consciously made better choices to create order and stability.  It isn't weight that's magic, but the lifestyle changes that are required to make it happen. (Okay, shallow and pedantic people, go ahead and say it with me: "But even that's not magic, but hard work!")

I have no delusions that it will be easy, that just because I decided I want to do things differently means I will. I really like sugar, and it insinuates itself into so many foods one wouldn't expect it to be - never mind shows up, in flourescent colors (often figuratively, sometimes literally) that would make any 80s child's heart soar, in foods I adore (cheesecake and tres leches cake: hi! Miss you! Love you!) It won't be a scary journey, however, because I won't give these up: I just won't eat them everyday. Yes, that's pretty much what I do now.

Welcome to the beginning of my journey towards weight loss, increased muscle fat, and an all around healthier lifestyle.
